DJ LeMahieu, Yankees Agree On 2-Year Contract

Signing LeMahieu isn't going to thrill Yankees fans who have their heart set on Machado, but this is a really solid, sensible move by Cashman. The deal is expected to be between $22 million and $24 million, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

This move nearly guarantees that the Yankees are out of the race for Manny Machado.

While LeMahieu does not sport much power, he possesses good bat to ball skills. This past season, most of his pop returned, but his overall output checked in at.276/.321/.428 - rather pedestrian production when considering his hitter-friendly home setting (86 wRC+).

LeMahieu's multi-positional abilities will allow him to play second base, with Gleyber Torres at shortstop, in the event that the oft-injured Tulowitzki can not take the field.

LeMahieu is widely regarded as one of the best defenders at second base; winning the NL Gold Glove at the position three times including the last two years.

Outside of his rookie season, where he played sparingly for the Chicago Cubs, LeMahieu's competed for the last seven years for the Rockies at second base.

LeMahieu has also started 41 games in his career at third base and one game at first base.

As for Manny Machado, LeMahieu's signing likely signals the end of the possible fit. The Yankees have not publicly made Machado an offer - and with LeMahieu, Andujar, Torres, and Tulowitzki now - they may never get to that point. The 2019 Yankees will also be full of depth as they have valuable assets all around the diamond.

No doubt, that is the most probable outcome, perhaps even 95 percent probable.
