The incident with Tagliafico that saw Muller banned

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller has been banned from both games against Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16.

He was given his marching orders during the thrilling 3-3 draw with Ajax after catching Nicolas Tagliafico with a head-high challenge.

Afterwards the 29-year-old said sorry via Twitter, writing: 'I would like to apologise to Nico Tagliafico for yesterday's incident. A straight red card warrants a mandatory one-match ban but Uefa deemed the offence severe enough to increase that punishment.

Maximilian Wober, who was also sent off during the 3-3 draw at the Johan Cruyff Arena for a risky tackle on Franck Ribery, will miss Ajax's last 16 tie with Real Madrid after he was handed a two-match ban as well.

Liverpool host Bayern at Anfield in the first leg of the Champions League clash on February 19 before heading to the Allianz Arena for the return leg on March 13.

Bayern have already responded saying they will appeal against the decision.

Meanwhile, Croatia defender Dejan Lovren has been banned for one global match over comments he made on social media about opponents Spain following his side's 3-2 Nations League win in November. He also told reporters after the match that Spain were "rude on the pitch" and bad losers.

Thomas Muller might be powerless to block Liverpool's UEFA Champions League progress.
