According to the CDC, the flu infects the respiratory tract.

These estimates are cumulative and will be updated over the course of the annual flu season on Fridays.

More than 6 million Americans have already caught influenza this flu season, and as many as 80,000 have ended up in the hospital, federal health officials said Friday.

Influenza activity was "widespread" in 30 states - a substantial decline from year-ago data from the week ending January 6, 2018 when 49 states had widespread flu activity. "But it does not look anywhere as severe as a year ago, " she said.

And in Saskatchewan, public health officials are pleading with parents to get their children vaccinated after influenza killed three unvaccinated preschoolers in the province. Calculations are based on adjusted rates of laboratory-confirmed, influenza-associated hospitalizations collected through a surveillance network that covers approximately 8.5% of the US population, or about 27 million people.

Half those people have been to the doctor because of flu, it says.

In New Brunswick, where no children have died with a lab-confirmed diagnosis of influenza, the virus still seems to be targeting a younger demographic than in the last few seasons.

The CDC said that reported cases tend to increase in November before peaking between December and February.

Indiana has now recorded its fourth influenza-related death of the 2018-19 season, according to the Indiana State Department of Health's weekly influenza report. The organization estimates that flu has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses each year in the United States and several deaths.

The CDC recommends flu vaccinations to decrease the risk of contracting the virus and its possibly deadly side effects.

"It's still not too late to get a flu vaccine".

"I think we could be doing a better job to really raise awareness to say kids between six months to five years old are a high-risk group".
