Manchester United have placed Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone on their shortlist of candidates to become their next permanent manager should the Red Devils miss out on Mauricio Pochettino, according to a report in England.

The Red Devils sacked Jose Mourinho in December after making their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

However, United are increasingly anxious that the Argentine could remain in north London and are considering alternatives, including caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and even England boss Gareth Southgate.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Manchester United are interested in the former Argentina global as potential manager at Old Trafford.

Another salient fact working in United's favour in this situation is that Simeone only has 18 months left on his contract with Atletico, and is still in the process of negotiation.

The Spurs boss signed a five-year deal only last summer, while chairman Daniel Levy is likely to demand in excess of £50million to let him leave.

Simeone shares a similar style to Pochettino, both having been forged as coaches under Marcelo Bielsa, but has titles to go with it, winning La Liga and reaching two Champions League finals. It will definitely happen'.
