ATP Auckland Tennys Sandgren downs Cameron Norrie for maiden ATP trophy

American Tennys Sandgren claimed his first ATP tour title on Saturday with a comprehensive straight sets victory over Briton Cameron Norrie in the final of the Auckland Classic.

Speaking to Sky Sport after his win, Sandgren said: "A little bit lost for words". A lot of work, a lot of training, a lot of sacrifice goes into even making a final.

In a tournament in which none of the seeded players made it to the final four, Sandgren was playing only his second ATP final - having lost in Houston previous year - while it was the first for wildcard entrant Norrie.

Sandgren first burst onto the scene at last year's Australian Open, where he earned his first two wins against Top 10 opponents and at World No. 97 became the lowest-ranked player to reach the Melbourne quarter-finals since World No. 105 Mikael Tillstrom in 1996.

"I'm just grateful, just grateful to be out here to play and compete".

Struff took the early initiative in the second set, with Norrie dropping a serve for the first time this week. There was a further service break each before Struff held on to take the set.

After breaking the British player in the opening game of the first set, Sandgren dropped his serve in the fourth game, then immediately broke again for a 3-2 lead.

He saved a break point in the eighth game, eventually clinching the game with his fifth ace, and served out the set in 41 minutes.

Alex de Minaur lifted his first ATP Tour title on Saturday, beating Andreas Seppi 7-5, 7-6 (5) to win the Sydney International.

"I just want to say a big congrats to Tennys, I know myself and my team have a lot of respect for you and you've had a lot of setbacks in your career with injury so congrats for today, you were too good", Norrie said.
