Suspect in Closs killings, kidnapping due in court

Accused Jayme Closs kidnapper shaved his head so he would not leave hair behind at her home authorities say

Authorities believe he killed Jayme's parents to abduct her.

The suspect, Jake Thomas Patterson, a 21-year-old Gordon resident, was arrested shortly after Jayme was discovered last Thursday. Her abduction led to a search that ended Thursday when she was found alive - and Patterson was arrested - about 70 miles from her home.

He faces two counts of first-degree intentional homicide for killing Closs' parents and one count of kidnapping, Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Friday.

"As a family we will get through all of the healing process Jayme has", her aunt, Jennifer Smith, wrote on Facebook.

For the past couple of months the community of Barron and beyond has been praying for a safe return of 13-year-old Jayme Closs.

"She told me who she was and then that's when I said this child needs to be someplace safe and you need to get her there now", Nutter said.

"She hadn't taken a bath for weeks if at all", added Peter.

"In my mind, I said, 'oh, that can't be the same person, '" she said.

"I'm so glad they believed us", Nutter said.

"When she wants information, we'll give it to her; and when she wants to tell us things, we'll take it from her", he said.

The sheriff calls it "a very well-planned out attack". As an example, Fitzgerald said Patterson shaved his head to avoid leaving any hair as evidence during the assault.

Jake Patterson had, as it turns out, worked at the same turkey processing plant, but only for a single day three years ago.

A sign above the door reads "Patterson retreat", and another says "welcome" - but the grounds, which are littered with junk cars, rusty bikes and garbage - feel anything other than inviting. Patterson quit, saying he was moving from the area, according to the company.

"This is the nightmare case that we all, as parents, family members ... dread", FBI Special Agent Justin Tolomeo said.

A panicked 911 call was made that night, with frantic movement heard, but no words audible.

Jayme described Patterson's auto to law enforcement officers and they found him soon after, driving the streets, allegedly hunting her. When the dispatcher called back, a voicemail greeting indicated the phone belonged to Denise Closs, 46.

Peter and Kristin Kasinskas, who helped rescue Closs, described the girl as "dirty", "thin" and "really exhausted and run down" after she escaped the hell house Thursday.

The teen had been missing for nearly three months when she was found on a deserted backroad in Gordon, Wisconsin, after being kidnapped by Jake Patterson, 21.

Police arrived to find the door kicked in, Jayme missing and her parents dead.

Nutter and Jayme went to the closest house, the home of Kristin and Peter Kasinskas, and they called 911.

Minutes later, the police radio cackled: Patterson had been apprehended.

When Jayme said the name, Kasinskas said she immediately recognized it.

Jayme has been staying with an aunt in Barron since she escaped. But Jayme said his age, and Kasinskas realized the ages lined up, too. "What a great feeling to have her home".
