According to the first reports, the aircraft was attempting to recover at its homebase in bad weather after a training sortie when it performed a hard landing. Of the four crew members, two were injured and were transported to a medical facility to receive assistance whereas two were killed. The plane was not carrying munitions, it said. The third pilot of the Tu-22M3 bomber that crash-landed in northwestern Russia's Murmansk Region has died in a military hospital, a local emergency medicine center told TASS.

At least three crew members were killed and one injured when a military strategic bomber crashed in northwestern Russian Federation on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry has said.

The crash took place at about 13.40 p.m. (12.40 p.m. Kyiv time, - 112 International)', the message said.

The Tu-22M3 is a twin-engined supersonic heavy bomber built in the 1980s. The status of other crew members is not reported. According to law enforcement officials, the Russian Air Force's fleet of Tu-22M3 will remain grounded pending the results of an official inquiry into the causes of the accident. On January 18, a pair of Su-34 fighter-bombers crashed into the Sea of Japan after reportedly colliding with each other off the coast in Russia's Far East.
