Betts spoke on Saturday night at the New York Baseball Writers' Dinner, where he officially received his MVP award.

Mookie Betts will not be joining the World Series champion Boston Red Sox when they visit the White House.

The Red Sox were originally scheduled to visit the White House in February, but chose to have the visit rescheduled due to the government shutdown. "I decided not to".

Betts joins Rafael Devers as the only other Red Sox player to publicly confirm he won't attend. The trip was reportedly rescheduled from February 15 to May 9 in wake of the government shutdown. Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez is "unlikely" to visit, while infielders Xander Bogaerts and Eduardo Nunez are reportedly undecided.

Boston manager Alex Cora, a native of Puerto Rico, has been outspoken about his trepidation about visiting the White House due to President Trump and his policies - particularly his handling of the devastation from Hurricane Maria. He recently expressed concern about the USA administration's policies toward Puerto Rico and indicated he might not make the trip.
