Radical Revamp of Facebook Apps

Facebook getting its messaging apps to be friends

WhatsApp is currently the only one of these platforms that has end-to-end encryption and Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg now wants this feature available across the company's different messaging apps. There are widespread concerns about the plan's impact. The result will be a global messaging system with a user count of 2.6 billion, with those users then able to communicate across all three platforms.

It will also raises questions over data privacy if information is being shared between the services.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is working to integrate the underlying technology of WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, the New York Times reported on January 25, citing people familiar with the matter. When Facebook acquired Instagram back in 2012, and later WhatsApp in 2014, Zuckerberg made assurances that the entities would continue to operate separately and enjoy autonomy from their parent company.

According to a report in The Wired on Saturday, to universally preserve end-to-end encryption poses a whole additional set of critical challenges for Facebook.

However, in its parting shot, the Irish DPC said: "It must be emphasised that ultimately the proposed integration can only occur in the European Union if it is capable of meeting all of the requirements of the GDPR".

Let's go back to Facebook and its project to allow inter-communication between WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, unveiled last week by The New York Times.

Unifying the backend of these three apps means it could be easier for people to send messages across the platforms, for instance, simultaneously benefiting Facebook in ensuring users stick to the company's products.
