Millennials face increased risk of cancer 'because they're so fat'

'Shocking' rise in obesity-related cancers among young adults

'Shocking' rise in obesity-related cancers among young adults

'Most cancers occur in older adults, which means that as the young people in our study age, the burden of obesity-related cancer cases and deaths are likely to increase even more.

Kidney cancer rates in people in their twenties are rising by 6 per cent a year, according to researchers who suggested that extra fat during key stages of youth could lead to deadly diseases.

In contrast to obesity-related cancers, rates of most of the 18 non-obesity related cancers did not increase among young adults during the study period.

The obesity epidemic may be contributing to an increase in certain cancers among millennials in the USA, a new study suggests.

The number of people diagnosed with obesity-related cancers is rising quickly in millennials - faster than it did for older generations, the study found. Specifically, the study in the Lancet sees potential trouble with colorectal, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, and pancreatic cancers, as well as multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer, reports CNN.

Six of 12 types of obesity-related cancers appeared with a "significantly increased" frequency between 1995 to 2014 in the millions of people included in the study.

The average annual percentage change in pancreatic cancer incidence increased with decreasing age, from 0.77 per cent for those aged between 45 and 49 to 4.34 per cent for those aged between 25 and 29.

The age group with the greatest increased risk of developing multiple myeloma was those aged between 30 and 34.

Obesity is now one of the most preventable causes of cancer, responsible for around one in 20 cases in the United Kingdom and one in 12 in the US.

'Younger generations are experiencing earlier and longer-lasting exposure to excess fat and to obesity-related health conditions that can increase cancer risk'.

"Given the large increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among young people and increasing risks of obesity-related cancers in contemporary birth cohorts, the future burden of these cancers could worsen as younger cohorts age, potentially halting or reversing the progress achieved in reducing cancer mortality over the past several decades".

Experts said more research is needed to explore what is causing the rising rates because this study does not prove obesity is the only reason.
