Study Finds Cannabis Might Not Lower Sperm Count After All

One widely circulated 2014 study involving almost 2,000 British men - the world's largest study to explore how common lifestyle factors influence sperm morphology (the size and shape of sperm) - found that males under 30 with less than four-per-cent normal sperm were almost twice as likely to have used cannabis in the previous three months.

In the new research 1,143 semen samples were collected from 662 men between 2000 and 2017.

It found that men who reported ever using cannabis actually had higher sperm counts on average than men who claimed to have never touched the stuff.

Of all those who participated, 55 percent had smoked marijuana before - 44 percent of those men had tried it in the past, while 11 percent were current marijuana smokers. However, the new study showed that men who smoked weed had an average sperm concentration of 62.7 million sperm per millilitre (million/mL). That's a lot.

The findings, published in the journal Human Reproduction, also showed that only 5% of marijuana smokers had sperm concentrations below 15 million/mL, which is the World Health Organization's threshold for "normal" levels, compared with 12% of the non-smokers.

Nevertheless, the study authors quickly noted that smoking cannabis may not mean that one's chances of becoming a father increases.

United States lead researcher Dr Jorge Chavarro, from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, said: "These unexpected findings highlight how little we know about the reproductive health effects of marijuana, and in fact of the health effects of marijuana in general".

He said: "These unexpected findings from our study highlight that we know too little about the reproductive health effects of cannabis".

The men who admitted to smoking marijuana at some point in their life seemed to have higher concentrations of sperm than those who had never had a puff. They were also all college-educated white men, so the results can't be applied to the wider population.

There could be a non-causal explanation for the association, such as the effect of the male hormone testosterone on both sperm count and risk-taking behaviour such as smoking cannabis.

Scientists found there was no significant difference in sperm concentrations between current and former smokers.

They further note that although previous studies have suggested that marijuana may have a negative effect on male reproductive health, they have mostly been animal studies or focused on men with histories of drug abuse.

Other experts in the field have questioned how robust the association is. The men in that study who used marijuana at least once per week, in addition to other recreational drugs, had even lower sperm counts, the researchers found.

Dr Feiby's point of view was seconded by leading British expert, Allan Pacey who said that the high testosterone in men's bodies could the reason why these men smoke weed.

Dr. Lindsey A. Hines, of the Centre for Academic Mental Health at the University of Bristol, U.K., said: "When interpreting these findings, it's important to remember that we can't tell if cannabis is causing a higher sperm count, as no measures of sperm count were taken before the men had started using cannabis".
