Time To Talk? Half Of Brits Don't Talk To Friends In Real Life Because Of Social Media

Time to Talk Day is an annual campaign encouraging everyone to open up conversations about mental health, whether at home, in the workplace, in sports clubs or in schools.

Councillor Janet Willis, Cabinet Member for Customers and Transformation, said: "Around 15% of those in work in England have symptoms of a mental health problem and people with a mental health condition are three times more likely to have a long term period of sickness".

People are being urged to use Time to Talk Day to have a meaningful conversation about their mental health, whether that's face-to-face, over the phone, or on social media - because social media isn't always the enemy, but finding a balance between using it and face-to-face interaction is key.

Wrexham's Assembly Member is backing a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing the stigma and discrimination around mental health.

Figures released today as part of "Time To Talk Day" show that the average person in Norwich has 909 friends on social media, yet a third of us say we wouldn't feel able to call upon any of those friends if we were struggling.

In 2017, pladis, the global snacking company behind the McVitie's brand, signed the Time to Change Employer Pledge and previous year committed to training all its line managers in the United Kingdom on mental health by the end of 2019. To really drive positive change, they need to create an open, supportive culture that encourages all people to look after their mental health, support their colleagues and speak out without fear of judgment. The data also shows that mental health issues have overtaken all other areas of traditional concern for employees, including: work stress, relationships, and general health issues. "As Ford's public awareness film highlights, talking about mental health doesn't have to be the elephant in the room".

This truly transformational programme has seen us train 1,700 workplace volunteers - 15 percent of our United Kingdom workforce - to understand and engage with mental health issues. Every Ally has gone through a half-day classroom-based training session, raising their understanding and capability in addressing mental health challenges through role-plays and scenarios. However, many people still feel afraid to talk about mental health, with some individuals feeling ashamed or isolated. Supporting our employees' mental health will continue to be a business imperative for Accenture, because it helps our people to live fulfilling, productive lives. Which is better for them - and makes for a thriving and successful business.
