Fire at the Ocado warehouse in Andover Hampshire

News today that the fire at online delivery firm Ocado's robotic order-fulfilment warehouse has been put under control, and no longer regarded as a 'major incident, ' will be welcomed by Ocado customers and of course the firm itself.

The removal of the refrigerants has been completed, while local residents and workers are now also able to access the area.

Ocado said: "As previously announced, there has been substantial damage to the Andover building and its contents".

The cause has not been determined but Ocado has been forced to cancel thousands of customer orders.

The fire broke out on Tuesday 5th February in a section of the ambient grid.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the "stop message", which signals the end of an incident, came in at 6.36 a.m. (0636 GMT) on Tuesday.

A fire service spokeswoman said about 20 families were at a rest centre set up in Harrow Way Community School, Andover, after being evacuated from their homes.

"This is obviously a awful event and thankfully no one has been hurt, although some firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation".

Part of the roof collapsed.

One local resident tweeted during the blaze: "Just streets away - the noise, heat, smell and light pouring from the Ocado warehouse is frighteningly real". An exclusion zone has been lifted but firefighters may take another few days to extinguish the blaze fully. Makes you truly appreciate the fearless men and women of the Fire Service!

The setback for Ocado, which has warned that sales will be hit as a result of the blaze, comes amid the firm's transformation plan to build robot-operated warehouses for retailers across the world.

And it said it had comprehensive insurance for the property, stock and equipment on site, and for business interruption losses.

The complex - which Ocado calls a customer fulfilment centre (CFC) - had been providing about 10 per cent of the firm's United Kingdom capacity and used the robotic technology that it is selling to retailers around the world.
