Netflix has finally added the smart download feature to its iOS apps after debuting it for Android in July a year ago.

Netflix claims that it wants users to spend less time managing their downloads and spend more time actually consuming content, something the Smart Downloads feature will help them accomplish. The feature also automatically deletes a downloaded episode after it has been watched, alleviating storage problems on mobile devices. The feature is created to automatically delete an episode before it installs a new one. The app will delete any episodes you have watched before downloading the next.

Android first received this feature back in 2018.

Once you've done that, simply head over to the "downloads" section of the app and you'll find the "smart downloads" toggle at the very top.

This is ideal for mobile users who watch a lot of Netflix content as they travel, either on a commute or a long flight.

You can also to turn the feature on and off from the App Settings. However, the app only works when your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, so be sure to get all of your downloads finished before heading out. To do this, select the Menu icon and then "App Settings". Now, the Netflix iOS version users will be able to make use of the Smart Downloads.

The company says that this feature will improve the viewing experience for the users by making it easier for them to take their favourite Netflix shows and movies with them. Apple device owners already had access to the video platform's download feature for offline watching, but until now they've been required to manually delete and add content. Some subscribers noticed a pop-up that asked them if they wish to "watch this scene again".

"The faster our members can get to the next episode of their favorite stories, the better", said Netflix.
