Power out in Donegal homes, trees cleared as Storm Erik blows out

Various Met Office warnings are currently in place including a yellow weather warning for rain

STORM Erik is causing chaos across the country as it batters the United Kingdom with high winds.

The heavy rain will then edge into Wales and the north-east England overnight, and there could even be a chance of snow in high areas in the south overnight.

As winds ease off later on Saturday, some hill snow is forecast in central and southern parts of England and into Wales, Mr Burkill said, before calmer conditions on Sunday.

The Met Office said exposed coastlines and hills - including in the East of England - could experience gusts of up to 70mph.

Saturday will see a mix of sunny spells and blustery showers, with the most persistent rain in the north of the country and the possible risk of hail and thunder in the west.

A British Airways plane has been filmed being forced to abandon its landing as strong winds from Storm Erik batter the UK. As this morning progresses, however, the rain and cloud cover will head towards Scandinavia although, for most areas in the south, it will still be a wet start to the day.

"We're looking at winds of 50 to 60mph in Northern Ireland and the west of Scotland".

The improved weather will be a relief for Britons in various parts of the United Kingdom who suffered the wrath of Storm Erik on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday a kitesurfer died amid strong winds in an incident on the Saunton Sands beach in north Devon, although a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police would not confirm whether the death was weather-related.

Met Office yellow - "be aware" - severe weather warnings are in force until 3pm, including for rain.

A separate yellow weather warning for heavy rain was issued for northern Scotland on Saturday.

The Met Office has put a weather warning for wind in place covering most of the United Kingdom, with strong winds expecting in the south of Scotland, much of England, and Northern Ireland.
