At Dallas-Forth Worth airport alone, guns were found in carry-on bags 219 times previous year.

And what's more surprising, a record 3,656 of these found firearms - more than 86 percent of them - were found loaded.

Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Phoenix Sky Harbor were the top three airports where guns were confiscated in 2018.

Coinciding with the increase in the confiscation of guns was the increase in traffic at USA airports as a total 813.8 million passengers and crew were screened at checkpoints in 2018, a 5.5 percent increase from the year previous, TSA said. Ten airports accounted for almost a third of all the cases.

The number of firearms seized at airport security checkpoints has more than quadrupled over the last decade.

TSA agents confiscated a record-setting 4,239 firearms from passengers' carry-on bags at security checkpoints across the country.

'When you are going through a TSA screen checkpoint, you know you're there. "You don't just happen upon that... before you hit the first person in line... just take a quick look through your bag", he added. TSA is working with airports to improve signage reminding people guns can not be placed in a carry-on bag.

TSA rules concerning firearms and ammunition maintain that only unloaded firearms can be brought onto a plane but they must be in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage and must be declared to a TSA agent before boarding. The TSA can also seek fines up to $13,000 for anyone violating the laws.

Last month screeners in Atlanta missed one in a man's carry-on.

'Throughout the year, TSA officers demonstrated great professionalism, dedication, integrity and remained committed to the mission to secure you - the traveling public, ' the report said.

"Oh, I'm troubled by that too". 'We do everything we can to figure out why it happened'. Most ranged in age from their 30s to their 50s.

In October, a pilot from Sun Country Airlines was arrested at a Florida airport after TSA officials found a loaded gun in his carry-on suitcase.
