Veteran sports commentator Bob Costas confirmed that he was removed from NBC's 2018 Super Bowl coverage for bringing attention to the concussion crisis faced by National Football League players.

"I think the words were, 'You've crossed the line, '" Costas told ESPN in an article posted Sunday.

"My thought was, 'What line have I crossed?'"

Bob Costas has always been an outspoken critic about the dangers playing football can pose to the athletes who take to the gridiron, and some of that chatter resulted in NBC Sports' decision to part ways with the legendary sportscaster, according to an in-depth report from ESPN's "Outside the Lines". Costas then went on CNN days later to calm the firestorm, giving NBC Sports credit for letting him to speak so candidly over the years about such an important issue. "The reality is that this game destroys people's brains".

After WaPo published Costas' quotes, which also included "if I had an athletically gifted 12- or 13-year-old son, I would not let him play football", NBC released a statement saying, "Bob's opinions are his own, and they do not represent those of the NBC Sports Group".

Costas left NBC Sports formally in January after working for NBC Sports for four decades. NBC Sports declined to air it.

"I recall the phrase, 'It's a six-hour, daylong celebration of football, and you're not the right person to celebrate football, '" Costas says.

Sunday Night Football commentator Bob Costas sits on set before the NFL game between the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium on September 11, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona.
