U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar entered the 2020 presidential race on Sunday, becoming the first moderate in an increasingly crowded field of Democrats vying to challenge Republican President Donald Trump. She's citing the need to "heal the heart of our democracy and renew our commitment to the common good".

Ms. Klobuchar, 58, now in her third six-year term as a Senator for Minnesota, will seek to position herself as a contrast to Mr. Trump, who is expected to be the Republican candidate in the November 2020 election, focussing on both policy differences but also style and tact.

Klobuchar has pointed to her broad appeal in her state.

The Minnesota Democrat becomes the eighth major candidate - and the fifth Democratic senator - to announce a bid for president or the formation of an exploratory committee.

Ms Klobuchar won her most recent Senate race in November with more than 60% of the vote.

Klobuchar, 58, is hoping to belay her success in her home state - she easily won a third-term previous year and enjoys broad support from voters in urban, suburban and rural areas, including in dozens of counties Trump won in 2016 - and her reputation as a straight-shooting pragmatist who gets legislation passed onto the national stage. Klobuchar had worked with then Senator Norm Coleman, R, to help fund the new bridge and get it completed at a faster-than-usual pace, and has cited it as an example of achieving results through bipartisan cooperation. "That's community. That's a shared story. That's ordinary people doing extraordinary things", she said.

"But that sense of community is fracturing across our nation right now, worn down by the petty and vicious nature of our politics". We are all exhausted of the shutdowns and the putdowns, of the gridlock and the grandstanding.

Ms. Klobuchar has focussed her efforts on issues like antitrust oversight, agriculture and voter security. She supports the "Green New Deal", a Democratic plan proposed this past week to combat climate change and create thousands of jobs in renewable energy.

However, her legislative record has drawn criticism from both the GOP and some fellow Democrats.

"I saw the tweet about Amy Klobuchar and calling her a snow woman for standing there braving the snowfall", Navarro said early Sunday evening during a CNN panel. "I have I'd say high expectations for myself, I have high expectations for the people who work for me, but I have high expectations for this country".

Klobuchar, a lawyer and the former prosecutor in Minnesota's largest county, raised her national profile during a Senate Judiciary Committee a year ago for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexually assaulting a woman when they were both in high school.

When Klobuchar asked Kavanaugh whether he ever had had so much to drink that he didn't remember what happened, he turned the question around. Kavanaugh later apologised to Klobuchar, whose father is an alcoholic. Booker is also spending the weekend in the Midwestern farm state. Sherrod Brown of OH, who has been visiting early voting states, and Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who established an exploratory committee last month.

"This is the moment for the Midwest", she said, "and we don't want to be forgotten again in a national election".
