Ex-Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt signed to Cleveland Browns

Hunt is an interesting fit with the Browns, who are pretty deep at the running back position.

Hunt will be a restricted free agent after the contract expires, meaning the Browns will control his rights after next season.

Browns GM John Dorsey released a statement upon news of Hunt's signing.

Hunt was released by the Kansas City Chiefs early in December when TMZ Sports obtained and released a video of the Pro Bowl running back's involvement in an offseason assault. Former Ravens assistant coach Teryl Austin was sacked as the Bengals' defensive coordinator midseason, and former Marvin Lewis' 16-year-run as head coach ended after the season. If we knew Hunt would be active from Week 1, it would stand to reason the Browns might look to move on from Johnson and explore his trade market.

The NFL placed Hunt on the Commissioner Exempt List after the video became public and he was released November 30 by the Kansas City Chiefs.

It was a checkup on Hunt's personal life, not a recruiting pitch, and Nagy said he had no issues with Hunt when he coached him in Kansas City, calling him a "really, really good kid". But, Reece also believes a temporary suspension or punishment from the National Football League may be warranted, followed though by a second chance.

It's a shocker because the Browns, viewed as a team viewed as "on the rise", don't need any baggage dragging them down into the dirt.

"I have always believed that it is important moving forward to if a person wants to better themselves moving forward and be a better person, I am willing to give them a chance", Dorsey said. I think that is how you go about this.

Why now? Why not wait until the draft to find another running back?

The roster move was accompanied by relatively lengthy statements by Hunt and general manager John Dorsey, referencing (in non-specific terms), "my actions a year ago", and, "his egregious actions".

"I don't ever like to speak in definitive terms on anyone", Veach said.

Following the signing, the former third-round pick released a statement through the team admitting what he did was "wrong and inexcusable".

"I am committed to following the necessary steps to learn and to be a better and healthier person from this situation", Hunt said.

The Browns also have Johnson, who was RB11 in 2017 before losing playing time to Chubb and Hyde in 2018.

Here at the Browns, there is a detailed plan with expectations laid out that he understands and must follow, because any similar incident will not be tolerated. "I'm a work in progress as a person, but I'm committed to taking advantage of the support systems that I have in place to become the best and healthier version of myself". Perhaps that's partly because, in this short time frame, Dorsey could not possibly have enough evidence of how Hunt has learned from his actions and worked to change his behavior, certainly not to the extent to which the general manager could have conviction that this young player will not be violent again.
