First CryptoCurrency Clipboard Hijacker Found on Google Play Store

What just happened? Once again, the Google Play Store has been caught hosting malware-loaded malicious apps.

"As a result, people who meant to use the app to transfer digital coins into a wallet of their choosing would instead deposit the funds into a wallet belonging to the attackers", Ars Technica reported, adding that the malware "impersonated a service called MetaMask" on the Google Play store.

The service, called 'MetaMask, ' is only available as an extension for desktop browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

Update your Android device in a timely fashion, and install a "reliable" security app on your phone. The malware's main goal is to steal MetaMask users' credentials and private keys to be able to access their ethereum funds. Called "Android/Clipper.C" by researchers, the malware could access and change text on the Android clipboard.

Typically, cryptocurrency wallet addresses are long strings of characters for security purposes. Users usually copy and paste them instead of typing them out.

Security firm ESET published a blog post on Friday, saying that the malware, known as a "clipper", intercepts the content of the clipboard and, if it finds the addresses of online cryptocurrency wallets, can replace them with addresses owned by the attacker. The culprit in this instance was able to steal cryptocurrency by tricking users into depositing it into attackers' wallets.

It's worth noting that Google plans to change how Android's copy and paste system works in Android Q. New permissions would restrict when and how apps can access the clipboard and could potentially combat this kind of malware.

MetaMask does not now offer an app product for mobile devices. Google removed the app after Eset notified the search giant. It's also worthwhile to investigate official websites.
