In Unprecedented Move Morocco Recalls its Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

The Official Spokesman of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Colonel Turki Al-Malki, stated: "the Joint Forces Command of the Coalition carried out a military operation to destroy a legitimate military target, a location used by the Houthi militia to store and prepare the launch of UAVs for terrorist attacks in the capital Sanaa", the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have traditionally supported Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, which is disputed by the Algerian-backed pro-independence Polisario Front.

Morocco claims Western Sahara as part of its territory while the Sahrawi people there demands self-determination, which is supported by Morocco's eastern neighbor Algeria.

Morocco is said to have suspended its participation in the Saudi-led military coalition's war on Yemen.

The Moroccan Foreign Ministry, for its part, has yet to officially comment on al-Mansouri's abrupt recall.

Saudi Arabia entered Yemen's war in 2015 in an attempt to roll back advances made by the Houthis, a group of Shia rebels who overran much of the country in 2014.

He added that the diplomatic ties will resume their previous strength because both countries have strong historical bonds.

The documentary came just a month after Morocco's foreign minister Nasser Bourita expressed concerns over the humanitarian situation in Yemen in an interview with Qatari channel Al Jazeera.

Morocco recalled its ambassador to Saudi Arabia for consultations after the report aired, according to another Moroccan government official.

Bourita also hinted that Rabat had serious reservations about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's recent tour of other Arab countries, amid global condemnation of the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul.

The good relations between Morocco and Qatar have irked some circles within the Saudi regime to the extent that Saudi Arabia and the UAE that turns in its orbit voted against Morocco in the 2026 World Cup. Morocco's withdrawal from the war in Yemen was no longer a matter of if but when, especially after the intensification of the Saudi-led offensive and seemingly indiscriminate killing of innocent Yemenis.
