U.S. president Donald Trump wants his country to spend more on artificial intelligence (AI) technology research.

MIT Technology Review reported that the "American AI Initiative" has five main goals: Redirect investments, develop AI research resources, create AI standards, prepare American workers for AI changes, and engage in global AI efforts.

Instead, the White House hopes to provide leadership for private industry to take the initiative in developing artificial intelligence. So far, the USA has lacked a high-level strategy to pursue dominance in the field.

The executive order does not include any details about funding the initiative.

"It is the policy of the United States Government to sustain and enhance the scientific, technological, and economic leadership position of the United States in AI R&D and deployment through a coordinated Federal Government strategy, the American AI Initiative".

Establish standards: It will direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to create standards that foster the development of "reliable, robust, trustworthy, secure, portable, and interoperable AI systems".

"Artificial intelligence is something that touches every aspect of people's lives, from the way that they receive medical care to the way they grow or eat their food, to the way that energy is extracted throughout the country", an administration official said Sunday.

First, the executive order will urge federal funding agencies to step up AI investments.

Vivek Wadhwa, distinguished fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, discusses how the expansion of artificial intelligence may affect US employment. AI researchers will need to have computer models, computing resources, and federal data to kickstart projects.
