Cleveland Browns Did Not Speak with Kareem Hunt's Victim Before Signing RB

Did the Texans miss an opportunity with RB Kareem Hunt

The Cleveland Browns yesterday signed running back Kareem Hunt, almost three months after he was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs when a video surfaced of him shoving and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel last February.

They won't be joining forces in the Bears backfield this year as the Browns announced Monday that they signed the troubled Hunt to a one-year contract.

After months of investigating, research and one-on-one discussions with Hunt, Dorsey said he was comfortable bringing the Cleveland native into the Browns' organization. Dorsey expects the league to wrap up its investigation "within a couple weeks". The NFL's ongoing investigation of Hunt includes two other incidents following his 2017 rookie season.

Hunt has not been criminally charged but is on the commissioner's exempt list, making the OH native ineligible to play or practice. Hunt led the National Football League in rushing as a rookie in 2017 with 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns.

Dorsey drafted Hunt in 2017 and feels the former Toledo back's contrition is genuine. "After we brought our findings to ownership and we gave them the suggestions moving forward, they approved the suggestions that we made and here we are".

"The Cleveland Browns, with this signing, declare from ownership on down, that talent and winning matter above all else", Labbe wrote. I think that is how you go about this.

"I would like to once again apologize for my actions previous year", he said.

"What I did was wrong and inexcusable", he said, as per a Browns' official statement.

In 2016 Dorsey also drafted Tyreek Hill, who pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery on his girlfriend in a 2014 incident; she was pregnant at the time. That is not the man I was raised to be, and I've learned a great deal from that experience and certainly should have been more truthful about it after the fact.

And it's not as if the Browns have you and me at running back. If Dorsey believed that Hunt's being a part of the Browns could provide him structure and incentive to stay on track, he did not take the opportunity to detail that in his press conference. "Now what you have to do is take that person, and if the person is truly remorseful and he owns up to his mistake, he seeks to be a better man, I'm okay with a guy trying to get better. He understands the magnitude of it and he wants to prove to people that it was an isolated mistake that will never happen again". "This will be a day-to-day thing in terms of earning trust". At that point, Hunt comes off the exempt list, and his discipline begins the first game of the season. Projections on a suspension for Hunt range anywhere between four games and the full 2019 season, but it's anyone's guess as to what it will actually be. In 11 games, he amassed 824 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hunt is not expected to play for the Browns in September and maybe not in October.

The Browns also have a solid receiving weapon at the position in Duke Johnson, whose signed a three-year, $15.6 million extension last June.
