FEMA Administrator Brock Long Announces Resignation

"It has been a great honor to serve our country as FEMA Administrator for the past two years".

FEMA chief Brock Long is planning to leave the agency, sources say.

His resignation comes months after a controversy over his use of government vehicles.

Nielsen said Long would pay back the taxpayer money spent to use government vehicles for those non-official trips, CNN.com reported. Gaynor served as Long's deputy, and the replacement will only be temporary, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said.

But his reputation took a hit last fall when the Department of Homeland Security determined he had inappropriately used government vehicles to commute between Washington and his home in North Carolina.

But Long's time as the head of FEMA was also controversial.

In a statement, Long, 43, said "While this has been the opportunity of the lifetime, it is time for me to go home to my family - my handsome wife and two incredible boys".

"Over the last two years, Administrator Long has admirably led the men and women of FEMA during very hard, historic and complex times", Nielsen said in a statement.

His job was complicated by President Donald Trump, who feuded with Puerto Rican leaders after Hurricane Maria and threatened to cut off disaster aid to California.

He took over FEMA in June 2017, presiding over a particularly grueling hurricane season that included Irma, Harvey and Maria, plus wildfires in California that were the deadliest ever for the state.

"Going into other areas, like Puerto Rico, there was only one leg that was present and that's the fact, and that's the reality", Long said.

"While this has been the opportunity of the lifetime, it is time for me to go home to my family - my attractive wife and two incredible boys", Long's statement explained "Upon my departure, Mr. Peter Gaynor, will serve as Acting FEMA administrator".
