Razer Cuts 30 Positions as Future of Mobile Division is Uncertain

It's unclear if Razer has plans to move on to a third Razer phone.

The layoffs affected 2% of the company's workforce, according to a response directly from Razer to Droid Life.

The publication went to investigate the tip and reportedly found several engineers who left Razer this month.

Droid-Life recently reported on an anonymous tip which revealed that Razer had cancelled the development on the Razer Phone 3 and that it is laying off the bulk of its staff associated with the phone division. Razer stated that it will be working on new mobile projects and will be sharing the information about these in future.

"In our mobile division, there were some staff members who were let go, and others who were reassigned to other new projects".

All things considered, it's nice of Razer to push the Android Pie 9.0 update to its second generation phone, just as word about the company closing its phone business began spreading.

The Android 9 Pie stable update for the Razer 2 gaming smartphone is going to be released next week on February 27.

The update will be rolling out this time next week for unlocked devices, but if you're carrier locked (mainly US users) you'll have to wait a touch longer. That's when it will roll out for unlocked units. There's also a microSD card slot, allowing users to further expand the phone's storage capacity. For shooting selfies, the handset is equipped with a front-facing 8-megapixel fixed focus camera.

Razer unveiled the Razer Phone 2 in October a year ago with mostly specs upgrades such as IP67 water/dust resistance, OIS for the wide-angle lens, a brighter display and wireless charging support. The connectivity features available on the Razer Phone 2 are single-SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, GPS, and USB-C.
