A Southern California company is voluntarily recalling whole avocados over possible listeria contamination.

The recalled California-grown conventional and organic avocados were packed at the company's packing facility in California and distributed to several states including Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Customers can identify the affected avocados by checking for stickers that say "Bravocado" or ones that say "organic" and "California".

The company notice advises that customers can identify recalled avocados by the "Bravocado" sticker on the fruit.

All shipments from the packing facility are subject to the recall, but avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not being recalled and may continue to be sold and consumed. Other examples of the rare, Saturday food recall posting by the FDA: last year's massive shell egg recall in a salmonella outbreak and Pinnacle Foods recalling all Aunt Jemima frozen breakfast food products after listeria was found at a plant in 2017.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

There are no reported illnesses at this time.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause fever and diarrhea, and more unsafe complications in pregnant women.

Anyone who purchased the recalled product are urged to discard or return the items for a full refund. Symptoms include headache, fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

Henry Avocado issued the voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during a routine inspection at its California packing facility.
