Debuting at the Shanghai auto show later this month, the Volkswagen ID Roomzz is our first look at a future electric full-size SUV from the brand. That would give it the ability to drive in some limited-access, pre-mapped locations autonomously. The ID Buzz Cargo and its stretched platform meant VW could also fit a large 111-kilowatt-hour battery for a 340-mile range, and a similar setup might be used in the ID Roomzz.

The ID Roomzz will be built on VW's affordability-focused modular MEB electric-car architecture, along with the ID hatchback that will go on sale overseas soon, the ID Crozz small SUV that is expected to go on sale in the US next year, the ID Vizzion sedan in China and the USA, and the ID Buzz in the 2022.

The concept vehicle will feature a customizable interior with "completely new seat configurations", the automaker says.

"The I.D. ROOMZZ1 shows us what we can expect from full-size electric SUVs in the future".

In May, Volkswagen will begin taking orders for its electric hatchback, but until then there's a major auto show in the way, the one in Shanghai. It is expected to go on sale in China in 2021, followed by the 2022, and Europe by 2024.

The production vehicle will be the flagship of VW's I.D. family of long-range electric cars that will include a Golf-sized hatchback for Europe, the Crozz and Crozz Coupe SUVs, and a retro-styled I.D. Buzz minibus.
