The Islanders had held serve at the Coliseum over the past week, winning a dramatic 4-3 overtime contest in Game 1 on Wednesday and a decisive 3-1 victory in Game 2 on Friday.

It seemed as though home-ice advantage played a key role in the Islanders' Game 1 victory, as Josh Bailey was able to put home a Mat Barzal rebound to give the Islanders a 4-3 win in overtime.

Anders Lee ended things with an empty-net goal with 1:20 remaining in regulation.

Matt Murray finished with 32 saves for the Penguins, but Pittsburgh again struggled to generate any sort of offensive momentum against the Islanders.

The Penguins got on the board first, a deflection from Garrett Wilson that beat goalie Robin Lehner at 12:54 to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. New York, which allowed an NHL-low 196 goals during the regular season, has surrendered just five in three games. The last time Crosby went pointless in three straight playoff games in the 2016 Eastern Conference Final.

Game 1 was a back-and-forth battle between the Metropolitan Division rivals, with the third period seeing two goals by an Islanders and Penguins defenseman.

If the Islanders felt any pressure while taking their first 2-0 post-season lead since the 1983 Stanley Cup final - when they completed their run of four straight championships by sweeping Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers - it didn't show.

Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan downplayed the idea his team was "desperate" while facing a 2-0 deficit for the first time in his highly successful tenure. Always seemingly in the right position, the 27-year-old never looked rattled.
