Westport Super Stop & Shop workers on strike today

Their strike is part of a region-wide protest over wages and benefits.

EAST HARWICH -After months of stalled talks, union workers at Stop & Shop supermarkets, including the ones in East Harwich and Orleans, walked off the job Thursday afternoon. They say the contract changes they propose are needed to compete with non-union competitors.

"Rather than a contract that recognizes the worth and hard work that our associates provide daily, Stop & Shop has only suggested extreme and unreasonable cuts to health care benefits and take home pay, while substituting real client support with much more serve-yourself checkout machines", the union statement said.

Many have formed picket lines around some 240 Stop & Shop locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

"Stop & Shop said it's" contingency plans in place to minimize disturbance".

In a statement posted on its website, Stop & Strike stated that it was disappointed with the strike since contract negotiations are ongoing with the assistance of federal mediators.

"While Stop & Shop continues to propose drastically cutting worker benefits, Ahold shareholders voted on April 10 to give themselves an 11.1 percent raise in dividends over the a year ago", the union said in an emailed statement.

The company says its proposal includes across-the-board raises and health and pension benefits better than most food retailers.
