Aston Martin Rapide E Features Fast Charging And Will Be Capped At 155 Units

While Aston Martin has not revealed the prices of the Rapide E yet, it has announced that the all-electric sports sedan will be a limited edition model, with only 155 units slated for production.

The company this week confirmed preliminary specifications for the Rapide E released late past year, which includes two rear-mounted electric motors that produce a combined 449kW of power and no less than 950Nm of torque - enough to propel the sleek four-door sports sedan to 60mph (96.5km/h) in less than 4.0 seconds.

The Rapide E is rear-wheel drive, powered by twin motors and can theoretically do 155mph, although most models are likely to hit lifetime top speeds of around 4mph, when being shuttled gingerly from delivery van to the climate-controlled auto collection warehouse of someone who got lucky with an app once or used to race cars as a job.

As its name implies, the Rapide E is an electric version of the Rapide S. Working with the help of Williams Advanced Engineering, Aston engineers yanked out the 12-cylinder engine and installed a 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack stored in a case made from carbon fiber and Kevlar. The vehicle has been developed with Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) and has a 155-unit limited run.

Naturally, there are modes - GT, Sport, and Sport+ - and alongside those rear motors sits a limited-slip differential and revised spring and damper rates over the traditional, V12-engined Rapide.

In terms of looks, there's no mistaking this for a Rapide. Other things? There's a new honeycomb grille, a redesigned underfloor and a bigger rear diffuser. The wheels and low-resistance Pirelli P-Zero are also tuned for maximum efficiency.

Throughout the development process, the engineering team have focused on achieving effective cooling of the batteries and motors to ensure consistent performance, while strict weight targets have been realized using lightweight alloys and carbon composite materials. In total, the Rapide E's new aero pack marks an 8% improvement over the previous internal combustion model.

Inside and out, Rapide E comes equipped with a 10-inch digital display which gives the user all the key information needed including the battery's state of charge, current motor power levels, regenerative performance and a real-time energy consumption meter.

There's also a smartphone app that allow the handful of owners to monitor its range, battery status and time to charge. The Rapide's underbody has also been changed to improve airflow.

President and Group CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda said: "Unveiling the Rapide E will be a huge moment for Aston Martin. As our first all-electric production vehicle, it is a truly historic step. One that signals Aston Martin is prepared for the huge challenge of an environmentally responsible and sustainable future". "I believe Rapide E embodies that desire and paves the way for a hugely exciting future".
