United created some decent chances in the first few minutes, but didn't take them, and were punished when Ashley Young gifted Lionel Messi possession - who proceeded to score a brilliant goal from outside the box.

Manchester United are facing a rebuilding job this summer after they were soundly beaten by Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last night, with the wide gulf in class there for all to see.

Find out how each of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men fared in our player ratings after Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona.

Lionel Messi and Paul Pogba are the superstars on show in this one, but there's a lot more talent on both sides and the urgency to win from the two teams will make this a fantastic European night.

The goals ended Messi's freaky scoring drought in Champions League quarter-finals that had reached 12 matches dating back to 2013.

"It was spectacular", Messi said, quoted by Marca.

"I was lucky [on the first goal]".

In Turin, meanwhile, Donny van de Beek cancelled out Ronaldo's opener before Matthijs de Ligt took the victor to let the Dutch visitors advance 3-2 overall. He has 24 goals against English opposition in 32 games, scoring four times against United, nine against Arsenal, six against Manchester City, three past Chelsea and two past Tottenham.

"He's [Ronaldo] disappointed as we all are, but we can't be dragged down by this disappointment", said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
