Paul Scholes has until 26 April 2019 to respond to the Football Association

The FA have charged Manchester United legend Paul Scholes with misconduct.

The former Manchester United midfielder faces the charge due to his involvement as a director of National League club Salford City, although it is not thought that charges relate to his time as manager of Oldham Athletic, which he took up in February 2019.

Paul Scholes has until 26 April 2019 to respond to the Football Association charge.

It is alleged that the 44-year-old former England global placed 140 bets on football matches between August 2015 and January 2019, the FA said in a statement.

Scholes, who made 66 worldwide appearances for England, previously wrote a column for betting company Paddy Power.

Players and officials in football in England are banned from betting on any games.

He initially retired from playing in 2011 but reversed that decision the following year to help the club through an injury crisis.

Alongside fellow class of 92 graduates Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville, Scholes has overseen a period of dramatic success for Salford, helping reinvigorate the club.

He would only be in charge for seven matches, winning one, before resigning, saying he was unable to "operate as intended" and has stated he was misled before taking the job.
