On Good Friday, police removed a pink boat that had been parked in the middle of Oxford Circus since Monday.

Extinction Rebellion members, who have set up a garden on Waterloo Bridge, showed no signs of voluntarily shifting under the hot sun on Saturday, watched by tourists and families enjoying the Easter weekend.

Thompson's appearance followed a demonstration near Heathrow Airport earlier, where a group of around a dozen teenagers, some as young as 13 and 14, held a banner alongside a busy road which read: "Are we the last generation?"

On Thursday night the Metropolitan police said they had arrested more than 500 people so far and had cancelled leave for some officers over Easter.

Hundreds of people protested in Dublin today calling for political action on climate change.

The 16-year-old Swedish activist is due to meet senior British politicians next week having already met with Pope Francis and addressed the EU Parliament.

She admitted the demos were inconveniencing people but said the Suffragettes "disrupted an terrible lot of people's lives in order to get something that we now take for granted".

Extinction Rebellion protesters were warned by police they would face a "firm action" if it caused any offences - such as an obstruction of highway - at the site. The boat was then partially dismantled before finally being towed out of Oxford Circus.

One demonstrator said: "Holding the space is important and being arrested is not undignified. Being arrested is a statement".

It is one of the more aggressive encounters between police and demonstrators, which have so far remained largely good-natured and peaceful.

However, within minutes police numbers had dwindled, and demonstrators continued to occupy the road.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid also piled pressure on the police to use "the full force of the law" against the protesters.

"We need to stop digging them up and burning them, that is the biggest thing we can do to avert climate and ecological catastrophe". "Now is not the time to be on the wrong side of history".

Organisers of the so-called "Extinction Rebellion" protests have called for non-violent civil disobedience to force the British government to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025.
