"There are lots of people who have different colloquial phrases", Wray said.

Even inside the Federal Bureau of Investigation, however, some officials were confused about what precisely Durham would be investigating, and how that might fit with the inspector general's inquiry and another inquiry being led by U.S. Attorney John Huber in Utah, people familiar with the matter said.

In terms of Durham's eligibility to head the investigation into the investigators, Scalise said that though he does not know the attorney personally, he has heard good things and hope Durham "follows the facts where they lead".

Attorney General William Barr has appointed a US attorney to examine the origins of the Russian Federation investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was "lawful and appropriate", according to a person familiar with the issue. According to reports, Barr has begun a multi-agency investigation into possible surveillance on the Trump campaign.

Trump, asked outside the White House on Tuesday if he had ordered Barr to look into the matter, told reporters, "No I didn't ask him to do that".

Barr first confirmed publicly before Congress on April 9 that he was launching a separate investigation from the ongoing Justice Department inspector general probe into whether there was any improper or unauthorized surveillance of members of the Trump campaign prior to Trump's inauguration.

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions also appointed Utah U.S. Attorney John Huber to review whether political bias tainted decision making in the Justice Department and FBI in 2016, including with regard to the Page warrant and the investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

Durham is a career prosecutor who was nominated for his post as USA attorney in CT by Trump.

The president also commented on the recent congressional subpoena of his son Donald Trump Jr., saying his son already offered about 20-hours of testimony in the Mueller probe.

Barr appointed John Durham, the US attorney in CT, to conduct the inquiry, the person said.

Democrats have accused Trump of using the allegations to divert attention from special counsel Robert Mueller's findings that Russian Federation aided Trump's 2016 campaign and that he could not exonerate the president on the question of whether he tried to impede Mueller's investigation.
