New Acas advice on creating a positive mental health environment at work

Nainika Dinesh, the college's Graduate Common Room president, commented that "The main driving force of the week for us was to just be able to have conversations about mental health and create a space where people can come together and talk".

Just over 22% of all UK adults and nearly half of 18-24 year olds said images on social media had caused them to worry about their body image and the majority of adults surveyed think the UK Government needs to do more to protect the public from the presentation or use of unhealthy body images in advertising and social media.

Since then it has launched several initiatives offering support to those who are battling mental health issues, including mental health first aid training and the creation of mental health champions; sessions on mindfulness and dementia awareness; and launching a colleague assistance programme with a confidential telephone helpline that's available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Research by the Mental Health Foundation found 13% of adults had experienced suicidal thoughts or feelings because of concerns about their body image.

"Body image issues can affect anyone and at any stage in life".

"We particularly welcome the commitment to addressing the impact of social media on body image".

The charity wants the United Kingdom government to take action, by regulating social media and giving more powers to the Advertising Standards Authority.

He added: "For some people this is potentially very severe, with large numbers saying they have self-harmed or had suicidal thoughts and feelings".

Westminster is already consulting on reforms and the charity wants a new code of practice to ensure that social media companies don't harm their users' body image.

Paul Browett, 35, of Glasgow, said social media, TV and celebrities had helped to fuel his insecurities.

She said: "The impact social media can have on a person is extreme".

"We need to support each other as a society and break the stereotype of what people should look like".

Mental Health Minister Clare Haughey MSP will join staff from MHF Scotland at Glasgow Central Station today to encourage rail travellers to #BeBodyKind. This will be the focus of my visit to Girlguiding Scotland, where I'll outline the aims of our new advisory group.

Mr Rowland said: "Our survey underscores how commercial, social media and advertising pressures on body image are contributing to mental health problems for millions of people".

The Mental Health Foundation survey also found that just over a third of United Kingdom adults have felt "disgusted" because of their body image, and 20% said they had felt shame because of their body image in the previous year.

MHFA England chief executive Simon Blake OBE said: "Despite the increased awareness around mental health in the workplace, employees are telling us that there is still a significant gap in how we think and act about physical and mental health at work".
