Eat well, exercise more: New global guidelines to reduce risk of dementia

That includes getting enough exercise; treating other health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol; having an active social life, and avoiding or curbing harmful habits such as smoking, overeating and drinking too much alcohol.

In recommendations to counter an expected tripling in the number of people with the degenerative condition in the next 30 years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines are created to help medical professionals and governments to develop national policies.

Although the guideline is intended as a knowledge base for experts in the fight against cognitive decline and dementia, the World Health Organization said it would also be of great use to policy-makers in designing programmes that encourage healthy lifestyles.

The WHO also noted that dietary supplements, such as vitamins B and E, do not counter cognitive decline. The report said that although age is the strongest known risk factor for cognitive decline, dementia is not a natural or inevitable outcome of ageing.

With no treatment for dementia in prospect an global group of experts said that prevention through healthier living was people's best hope. There are around 10 million new cases of dementia every year, and this statistic is expected to triple by 2050, according to the report. Dementia is now incurable, but studies show a variety of things can affect the odds of developing it.

"As numerous risk factors for dementia are shared with those of non-communicable diseases, the key recommendations can be effectively integrated into programmes for tobacco cessation, cardiovascular disease risk reduction and nutrition".

It is a rapidly growing public health problem affecting around 50 million people globally.

The costs of caring for people with dementia is expected to rise to $2 trillion (roughly €1.8 trillion) per year by 2030. Alzheimer's Disease causes issues with memory, thinking, language and behavior and usually worsens with time.
