Hong Kong culls 6,000 pigs after African swine fever found

The virus was first detected in Vietnam in February and has spread to 29 provinces, including Dong Nai, which supplies around 40 per cent of the pork consumed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's southern economic hub.

Vietnam has culled more than 1.2 million farmed pigs infected with African swine fever, the government said today, as the virus continues to spread rapidly in the South-east Asian country.

A case of African swine fever has been detected in a Hong Kong slaughterhouse, prompting the culling of all 6,000 pigs at the facility.

"All four outbreaks occurred outside of the ASF controlled area of South Africa and have been reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health".

During a teleconference held on Monday by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung assigned the ministry to issue documents guiding the slaughter of pigs in affected areas under the supervision of veterinary agencies.

The department advised that pigs should be bought only from reputable owners, and that buyers should insist on a declaration from sellers that the pigs come from a healthy herd.

The statement said while African swine fever does not affect humans and the consumption of pork is safe, any meat and products from affected pigs can be a source of infection to other pigs. Denmark has begun erecting a 70km fence along the German border to keep out wild boars in an attempt to prevent the spread of the fever, which could jeopardise the country's valuable pork industry. Farmers should therefore ensure that, if any swill is fed to pigs, it must be precooked for at least an hour.
