Nearly a third of MI hospitals - 26 of 81 - received an "A" grade for hospital safety in the spring 2018 report card by The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog organization.

UP Health System-Marquette, War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Detroit Medical Center had two of its six hospitals on the list as did McLaren Healthcare Corp.in Grand Blanc and St. Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor.

Twice annually, Leapfrog uses publicly available data and sends each hospital a questionnaire to fill out to come up with the grades.

Patients at "D" and "F" hospitals face a 92% greater risk of avoidable death compared to hospitals with an "A" grade, while the risk is 88% greater at a hospitals with a "C" grade and 35% greater at "B" hospitals, according to Leapfrog.

In Spring 2018, Sebastian River Medical Center received an 'F' rating, but then improved later in 2018 with a 'C' rating.

"Quality is a continuous journey and we strive to be a national leader in delivering high quality care", Charles L. Jolie, a spokesman for Rush University Medical Center, said in an email. "The last time Hurley scored above a "D" was in Fall 2013", Jackson said in a statement. The hospital's safety rating has consistently improved during the past year. The findings actually represent a decline in deaths from 2016 when Johns Hopkins conducted a similar analysis for Leapfrog Group in which 206,000 preventable deaths occurred each year.

"If every hospital had the performance of an "A" hospital, an estimated 50,000 lives saved could be saved", according to Leapfrog.

An estimated 161,250 preventable deaths occur each year in USA hospitals, a decline from three years ago, according to a new analysis from the Leapfrog Group.

"To be recognized nationally as an "A" hospital is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in", said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade provides residents of MI with useful, up-to-date information to further ensure safety and accountability when choosing a hospital".
