The Catalans have already raided the Dutch giants for midfielder Frenkie de Jong and are now closing in on signing the Ajax captain.

And De Ligt was delighted with the Dutch side's campaign, adding: "It is indescribable". An academy product of Ajax, the centre-back burst onto the scenes back in the 2016-17 season as a 17-year-old and has never looked back since.

After meeting various times with De Ligt's people and the player himself, the club lost optimism, with the economic terms higher than had previously been spoken about.

De Ligt has also been linked with Liverpool, where he would be partnering Holland captain Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence. His grown in the past couple of years hasn't gone unnoticed, with the who's who of Europe keeping a watchful eye on him.

Goal claim that Barcelona, who have always been considered the frontrunners to land the 19-year-old, are now very close to securing a deal to bring him over to Camp Nou.

According to Metro, as reported by the Liverpool Echo, de Ligt was asked whether he had made his last appearance for the Dutch side and his response was very interesting.

De Ligt's move hit a snag when his agent Mino Raiola was handed a three-month ban by Fifa and the Italian football federation.

While the make-up of the Ajax team may not be the same next season, the footballing world has not seen the last of these stars.

With Frenkie de Jong's signing already done and dusted, the La Liga winners were expected to close in inevitably and immediately on de Ligt's, but matters with the Dutchman have become complicated, as per Sport English.

Although the will of the centre-back is to make a switch to Camp Nou and play alongside his compatriot Frenkie de Jong, the Netherlands global is "seriously considering" all options he has on the table.
