Elton John during the Red Carpet Arrivals for the screening of Rocketman at the Cannes Film Festival

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Sporting a sequined "EJ" rocket on his lapel, Elton John beamed his way down the Cannes red carpet on Thursday to see the premiere of his own biopic - "Rocketman".

Legendary entertainer Elton John has said he feels as though his life is a miracle, recalling a time in his career when he had to ask for help in dealing with his drug and alcohol problems.

John has praised Egerton's portrayal in the film, particularly Egerton's decision to perform all the songs himself.

"'Based on a true fantasy" is the tagline for Rocketman, the Elton John biopic, and they're not kidding. After they finished the performance, Egerton immediately went behind the piano to offer John a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"[Taron] has done the most phenomenal job with the music".

The film delves into the "Crocodile Rock" singer's uneasy relationship with an unfeeling father and a harsh mother, as well as a toxic early relationship which contributes to the singer's descent into addiction. The film also explores the musician's creative partnership with songwriter Bernie Taupin, who was in attendance at the festival. When I first heard him sing 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, ' I was flabbergasted. "He's worked double hard".

"I have to say, in our movie, "Your Song" is a bit of a triumph as a storytelling moment", Egerton weighed in.

John characteristically was in more flamboyant attire than his fellow attendees, with the musician dressed in a tuxedo emblazoned with sequins spelling out the film's title (and name of John's 1972 hit).
