The non-binding resolution is sponsored jointly by Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian-Democratic Union Party, the Social Democrats, the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party.

On a European level, the motion could serve as a precedent for other parliaments to label BDS anti-Semitic.

The Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement has been advocating for non-violent pressure on Israel since 2005, as they seek to end the occupation of Palestinian land, grant Arab citizens equal rights and recognise the right of return of Palestinian refugees - but Israel has labelled the movement anti-Semitic.

Securing Israel's survival has been a priority for Germany since the defeat of the Third Reich at the close of the Second World War, after which an estimated six million Jews were murdered at the hands of German authorities.

Rep. Lee Zeldin and several of his House Republican colleagues are hoping to force a vote on a bill meant to oppose the anti-Israel Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the decision in a statement on Twitter.

On the BDS movement specifically, the motion claimed that "the arguments, patterns and methods of the BDS movement are anti-Semitic".

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) brought forward a separate motion calling for a complete ban of the BDS movement.

It said the conflation of BDS and antisemitism was supported by "Israel's most rightwing government in history" and formed part of a strategy to delegitimise any attempt at global solidarity with the Palestinian cause. In its own motion, Die Linke called on the government to support efforts to find a peaceful two-state solution in the Middle East.

Its motion was also defeated. Its motion was also defeated.

Ahead of Tel Aviv's Eurovision Song Contest, human rights activists in support of Palestinian rights earlier had protested outside of the performance venue.

In the run-up to the event, the BDS has called on artists, music fans and broadcasters to avoid the event, arguing it amounts to "whitewashing" Israel's policies toward Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The FDP motion supported by the CDU, CSU, SPD and Greens says the "arguments and methods of the BDS movement are anti-Semitic", as it calls for the boycott of Israeli artists and because the BDS "don't buy" labels put on Israeli goods "recall the most awful phase of German history", referring to the Nazi slogan "Don't buy from Jews".

Israel's ambassador to Germany, Jeremy Issacharoff, welcomed the Bundestag decision.
