Robert F. Kennedy Jr. headlines anti-vaccine rally in Albany amid measles outbreak

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been 839 documented cases of measles so far this year in the USA, confirmed across 23 states from January 1 to May 10. "We're not here to take away anybody else's right, whether they choose to vaccinate or not".

The proposals and the outbreaks have prompted confusion, and a lot of questions. CapRadio's health care reporter Sammy Caiola answered queries from listeners, and from the CapRadio staff.

Q: Why are measles outbreaks happening? His patients typically come in to get protected against more exotic diseases like yellow fever. Measles tends to spike in winter, and the case numbers should level out as the temperature warms. Twenty-three states have reported cases this year. Because of a growing fear and misunderstanding of what vaccines can do, including the unfounded link between vaccination and autism, the measles vaccination rate has gone down, and we are now having to face the consequences of the recent unprecedented measles outbreak.

At the health reform and public health cabinet committee on Friday, Cllr Dan Daley (Lib Dem) asked whether there is any merit in this idea. This is timely as the 2019 Childhood Immunization Schedule for the Philippines was released late last February, details of which recommended vaccines for children and adolescents. Children one year old and up need two doses.

If you planning to travel overseas this summer and haven't received 2 doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella or MMR vaccine, Dr. Beaulieu says you need to get protected.

"That leads to some protection", Echols said. Once infected, there is no specific treatment for measles, so vaccination is a life-saving tool for children.

The health department is urging anyone who has global travel plans to make sure their shots are up-to-date before they go.

The measles vaccine is very effective.

"The people at highest risk are the people who are not vaccinated", Beaulieu says.

Director for public health in Kent, Andrew Scott-Clark, said uptake of these vaccinations is "critical" to protect vulnerable people. Most people born before 1957 are likely to have been infected naturally and therefore are presumed to be protected against measles, mumps, and rubella.

The best way to find out whether your shots are up-to-date is to call your physician.

There's always a risk that unvaccinated travelers will bring measles back from overseas.

The two diseases tend to display similar symptoms, hence the need to create a joint preventive measure. A "written and signed statement from the parent or guardian saying they object because of honest and genuine religious beliefs" is permitted under state law. California and MS are now the only states that completely bar exemptions other than for medical reasons. "Anybody born after that will require a 2 vaccination series".

Only children with medical exemptions can enter school without the required vaccinations. There has been some concern that parents are getting falsified medical exemptions, so SB 276 would give the state health department, rather than physicians, the final say on those forms. Though his United Kingdom medical license was revoked in 2010 for unethical behavior, misconduct and dishonesty, he and many like him are still running profitable campaigns against vaccines by promoting films and online web content to dissuade confused and ill informed parents. Another option is simply to get vaccinated. There are a number of other restrictions, which can be found here. Georgia has had 6 confirmed cases since early January, all of them between members of two families. Some parents were also accompanied by their kids. In 2014, UNICEF estimated requirement of measles vaccines could reach up to 190 Mn doses.

Parents who are anxious about the vaccinations have been known to throw "measles parties" to expose children to the disease to build immunity.

The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is available at doctors' offices and many retail pharmacies.

Q: What is a vaccine injury, and how often does it happen? Approximately 30,000 reports are filed each year, and roughly 90 percent describe mild side effects. Moderate events include seizures, joint stiffness, unusual bleeding or bruising and full-body rashes.

The anti-vax movement began when a false claim was made by British gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield about a link between vaccines and autism, in a later retracted 1998 paper.

Q: When is a quarantine necessary? There are some people who medically can not get vaccines.

More than 70 people, including four from OR, were diagnosed as part of a months-long outbreak in the Pacific Northwest that public health officials just recently declared over. But, rubella and measles are quite common in other parts of the world. Those people should be isolated for four days after a rash develops.
