Players split on Kyrgios ban after outburst

Nick Kyrgios has earned a reputation as a bit of a bad boy on the court

Nick Kyrgios has earned a reputation as a bit of a bad boy on the court

The volatile Australian was playing his second-round match against Norway's Casper Ruud at the Foro Italico and had levelled the clash at one set all after losing the opener.

Before he was defaulted, Kyrgios received a warning for ball abuse, then was docked a point for unsportsmanlike conduct and lost a game for more unsportsmanlike conduct.

The 24-year-old Australian tennis player is known for controversies, including smashing his racket, yelling obscenities and accumulating variety of unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in several fines.

Before he could officially be disqualified, he packed up his bag, shook hands with his opponent and the umpire and stormed off.

The Australian's outburst comes just a day after he launched an astonishing attack on some of the biggest names in tennis as part of a podcast at the Rome event.

The incident comes a day after he branded Rafael Nadal a sore loser, the Spaniard's uncle Toni an "idiot" and said world number one Novak Djokovic has a "sick obsession" with being liked in a podcast ahead of the French Open.

The contest was at 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 1-1 when the world number 36 departed after receiving the game penalty, meaning Ruud progresses to the last 16 of the tournament.

Kyrgios also revealed that he now gets on with Swiss major victor Stan Wawrinka, but still considers the "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend" sledging scandal to be "hilarious", although he says he would never do it again.

"Simply because, I've played him twice and like, I'm sorry, but if you can't beat me, you're not the greatest of all time". The Swiss was more aggressive and he efficiently defended the second serve before seizing the only chance on the return he got.

"I came out of the blocks well", Federer said.

"For anyone who wants to play sport, they just want to be like Federer". He hurt a chair?

He said: "The first thing that comes to mind is the greatest of all time, for me". "I had a good feeling. I think he got what he deserved".

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic, who is president of the ATP player council, said he had "no opinion" on whether Kyrgios should be suspended.

His observations on Nadal, a 17-time grand slam victor, and Djokovic, who has 15 majors, were dynamite. And he didn't hold back on the latter two after praising Federer.

"It kills me. He just rubs me the wrong way".

Roger Federer took a different stance and felt the fines, deduction of ATP points and the removal of complimentary accommodation was enough of a punishment.

Discussing Nadal, the 17-time Grand Slam victor, Krygios accused him of "lacking respect" and being "super salty", before saying: "When he wins, it's fine".
