Former Oregon WR Keanon Lowe tackled a gunman at a Portland high school on Friday

About 10 minutes before the end of class, the student appeared in the doorway in a black trench coat and pulled out a long gun from beneath his coat, senior Justyn Wilcox, who also was in the room, told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Officers responded to reports of a man with a weapon near Parkrose High School in Northeast Portland.

Original story: A Parkrose High School employee "wrestled" a man carrying a gun to the ground this morning, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

A high school football and track coach and former college football star at the University of OR tackled a would-be gunman on Friday at Parkrose High School in Portland - and no shots were fired.

Students are being reunited with their parents. Lowe couldn't immediately be reached for comment on Friday. It is not known whether any shots were actually fired during the incident.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a statement Friday that no shots were fired at Parkrose High School, no one was injured and the man is in custody.

Parkrose Middle School was put on lockdown because of its proximity to the high school, but will continue with its regular class schedule today.

'Parents, please do not come to the schools.

Lowe has been a coach at the high school for about a year, according to his LinkedIn page.

This is a continuing investigation-we'll update this blog as more information comes out. The students will be taken to the abandoned Sears outlet store parking lot, located at Northeast Sandy Boulevard and 122nd Avenue, to be reunited with their parents. They claimed that it may take one hour or more to safely release all students. Police say there are no other suspects. A police spokesman said the suspect was being interviewed on Friday afternoon. Police said the student had meant to harm himself.

Multiple Parkrose students told The Oregonian that they were initially locked in their classrooms shortly after police responded.
