Huawei wearable device shipments are growing rapidly

Apple ruling wearables in 2019 says report

Wrist-worn wearables such as smartwatches and fitness trackers continue to lead with 63.2 percent share while ear-worn devices are gaining popularity, accounting for 34.6 percent.

"The elimination of headphone jacks and the increased usage of smart assistants both inside and outside the home have been driving factors in the growth of ear-worn wearables", remarked Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC Mobile Device Trackers.

As per the report, Apple Watch in particular has proven to be highly successful at capturing unit share, but more importantly dollar share as the average selling price (ASP) of these watches has increased from $426 in 1Q18 to $455 in the latest quarter.

Huawei is rapidly ramping up its global shipments of wearables. When it comes to wrist-worn wearable devices only, Apple Sold 4.6 million, slightly behind Xiaomi. And it experienced growth of 282.2 percent in the quarter, outpacing the rest of the industry, and most of it by far. The Cupertino giant is estimated to have sold 12.8 million units during Q1, giving it 25.8 percent market share.

When IDC breaks things down to wrist-worn devices only in Q1, it's actually Xiaomi that sits on top for market share and shipments, putting the Chinese company ahead of Apple and Huawei, who again sit in third.

Apple maintained its market leadership position during 1Q19, with its three popular product offerings, the Apple Watch, AirPods and select Beats headphones, seeing significant sales.

Smartphone shipments will be down 5.5 percent in the first half of 2019 and will grow 1.4 percent in the second half of the year - driven by 5G acceleration, a growing selection of lower-priced premium handsets, and on-going uplift from markets like India.

It's followed by Samsung, with 9% market share and 152% growth, and Fitbit, with 6% market share and 36% year-on-year growth in shipment volume.

Of course, Huawei's success comes with an asterisk: Thanks to an attack by the US government, Huawei's ability to compete moving forward may be severely limited.

"Even without the growing trade tensions between the United States and China, the smartphone market has some important challenges that need to be resolved before we see growth again", said Ryan Reith, program vice-president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "However, with the recent uncertainty surrounding the company's future in smartphones, the outlook for the wearables side of the business will also remain in flux", IDC says.
