Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the measures could be needed if a deal announced last week between Washington and Mexico fails to reduce within 45 days the numbers of migrants entering Mexico, mainly from Central America, on their way to the US border. "It's going to be brought up because it has to be brought by their legislative body", Trump said during an impromptu, unplanned interview on CNBC.

In our editorial last week, we said, "If Trump's tariff threat gets Mexico to sign such [a safe-third-country] agreement, we will be the first to congratulate him on his successful brinkmanship".

Not so, said Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, holding up a paper and pointing to the previously announced details.

"I think the cold, hard reality is, even though nearly none of my members were enthusiastic about the prospect of tariffs, you have to give the president credit - it worked", McConnell said, according to Politico.

In a series of tweets, Trump warned that if Mexico does not cooperate with the United States and does not honor the agreement it reached with the administration last week that he will reimpose his proposed tariffs on Mexico. Mexico's leaders showed they weren't willing to play along. But if it's so sensitive, why is Trump even alluding to it in a tweet?

President Trump declined to say if Mexico, as part of their agreement with his administration, will become a safe third country for asylum seekers.

US automakers importing cars from Mexico have received a reprieve on tariffs after President Donald Trump secured an agreement on migration with the neighboring country.

After nine days of uncertainty, Mr. Trump backed down and accepted Mexico's promises.

Under the agreement, Mexico will rapidly expand a program under which migrants applying for asylum in the United States wait out the process in Mexico.

The New York Times reported recently that officials from the us and Mexico said several terms in the new pact were actually agreed to last December, not in last week's negotiations between the two countries, a report Trump dismissed.

Six-thousand Mexican troops are headed south to the Guatemalan border to slow migrants bound for the US. That's the difference. They couldn't get it'. "There is no other thing".

A regional asylum compact like the one Ebrard described could have major implications for asylum seekers, said Sarah Pierce, an analyst at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute.

The deal lays out "a regional approach to burden-sharing in relation to the processing of refugee status claims to migrants", the document said.

At a news conference in Mexico City, Ebrard said the two sides had agreed to assess in coming weeks whether Mexico had succeeded in reducing the number of asylum applicants and other immigrants entering the United States.

He also sided with those who said Mr. Trump didn't win much substance with the deal.

"But we purposely said we wouldn't mention it for a little while ..."

Trump has spent the days since Friday's announcement defending the scope of the deal. It has also pledged to reinforce its southern border with Guatemala with 6,000 members of its National Guard militarised police force.
