The United States beat Thailand 13-0 in their Group F game at the Women's World Cup in France.

"It is a tournament and goal difference matters so at the end of the day, you can't feel bad for scoring as many goals as possible in whatever game you're playing", US right back Kelley O'Hara said. "But we also feel like we've got more to do".

"She got five goals?!" Now, Morgan has eight career World Cup goals.

It hasn't always been an easy first week for the favorites at the 2019 Women's World Cup.

"I think they could have won with humility and grace but they couldn't manage to do that".

One of those players was Miranda Nild, and American-born Thailand forward who plays at Morgan's alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley. Playing in her third World Cup, she was named player of the match.

As the match continued, one thing became evident: The U.S. wanted to make a statement in their tournament opener. "We don't have any excuse and accept they are better", said Thailand coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian.

Morgan, who was seen consoling Nild after the game, was asked what she said to her fellow Golden Bear. "Yes they are athletes and they will be resilient". And I think that to be respectful to opponents is to play hard against opponents.

The U.S. picked up right where it left off in the first half after the break, scoring four goals in just over 10 minutes.

The team's biggest margin of victory was a 14-0 win over the Dominican Republic in a 2012 Olympic qualifier in Vancouver, British Columbia.

After netting four times in six minutes shortly after the restart, they then added six more goals in the last 16 minutes.

It may not have been a flawless match as several of the players were still finding their groove on the global stage, but the win gave the USA some comfort and confidence heading into their next game against Chile on Sunday. Afterward, former USA goalkeeper Hope Solo called Sweden "cowards" for bunkering on defense. The United States can score in such a wide variety of ways it isn't privy to an upset possibility in the way other top-flight teams are.
