The Dominican Republic has been the subject of controversy in wake of a series of reports tied to mysterious deaths involving American tourists.

The family of Glenside resident Yvette Monique Sport said she died in 2018 at a Bahia Principe Resort on the Dominican Republic after having a drink from the minibar. Wallace, 67, was from California and had been in the country to attend his stepson's wedding.

Wallace's niece, Chloe Arnold, said her uncle had been in relatively good health and had been skiing in Lake Tahoe the month before.

Nearly a week later, Maryland couple Cynthia Ann Day, 49, and Nathaniel Edward Holmes, 63, were found dead inside their hotel room at the nearby Grand Bahia Principe La Romana. Within five days, three USA tourists died in their rooms at hotels owned by the Bahia Principe Hotels and Resorts group, a different hotel chain than where McCoy and her husband stayed. "We reiterate our firm commitment to cooperate fully with the authorities and we expect a quick resolution of your consultations and actions, and we will not make any other statements that could interfere with them".

"We were having a great time ... and we ended up coming home as a broken family", she told Inside Edition.

There have been other reports in the past year of American tourists becoming ill while visiting the Dominican Republican.

Annette Wedington told WJZ in an exclusive last week that she wants answers after her son, Terrence Richmond, died in Jarabacoa.

In a news conference last week, tourism officials said the deaths might be coincidence noting that nothing like it has happened in the country before. "Things can happen. But right now we don't really know what's causing this and that's the biggest concern".

Awilda Montes, from New York, US, believes the 7-Up she drank at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville resort, in the Dominican Republic, contained bleach. The deaths are now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Their death certificates list the cause of death for both as heart attacks.

Last year, David Harrison, 45, of Maryland, suddenly died at the same hotel that Wallace stayed at.

Rojo, 29, had been staying at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with his family. Garcia also said there were inconsistencies between the woman's account of the events during the day of the attack, and her husband's account.

The deaths made headlines and first put the spotlight on what now appears to be a yearlong pattern.

Grand Bahia Principe La Romana is a resort known for its breath taking views.

Kaylynn Knull said she and her boyfriend enjoyed their vacation until they noticed their room beginning to smell of chemicals.
