‘Thanks For A Great Ride’: Lynx Retire Lindsay Whalen’s No. 13 Jersey

"It was great today to see them and supporting as always and it was a lot of fun".

On a rare 90-degree Saturday in Minnesota, almost 9,000 fans gathered at Target Center to commemorate Lindsay Whalen, and when it was time for the Minnesota-born point guard to comment on her extensive career, the microphone stayed in her hands for less than a minute. She made six All-Star teams.

The Minnesota Lynx sent Lindsay Whalen's number 13 to the rafters at Target Center - making her the first player in franchise history to have her number retired.

The afternoon featured tributes from former teammates, including Twins great Joe Mauer and Whalen's former coaches Geno Auriemma, and Cheryl Reeve.

Coach Reeve and the fans said Whalen changed the game of women's basketball and inspired young people to play. Whalen will enter her second season coaching the Gophers later this year.

"Her jersey is in the rafters because she's a victor", said Reeve.

The Lynx couldn't deliver a win in Whalen's return, however, falling to the Los Angeles Sparks 89-85.
