Duke batter tries to 'ice' stud Vanderbilt pitcher Kumar Rocker fails miserably

Armed with a 97-mph fastball and wicked breaking ball, he allowed just four baserunners - hitting one batter, walking two and allowing one to reach on a wild pitch following a strikeout. It came as Vanderbilt was facing elimination after losing their first game against Duke on Friday. He retired the final 10 batters he faced and struck out the last four.

Rocker's 19 strikeouts tied the most in a game this season in NCAA Division I.

Vanderbilt pitcher Kumar Rocker tossed a no-hitter against Duke on Saturday, the first in a Super Regional in NCAA Tournament history.

We had arguably the greatest pitching performance in college baseball history during the NCAA Tournament Super Regionals on Saturday night.

Rocker's 131-pitch performance kept the Commodores alive in the best-of-three series.

"To be able to step up that way as a freshman is inspiring!"

The Blue Devils (35-25) also snapped a 12-game winning streak by Vanderbilt, the nation's No. 2 overall seed to move a win from its first College World Series berth since 1961.

"Candidly, Kumar Rocker was just better than us tonight, " Duke coach Chris Pollard said. Fans gave him a standing ovation when Taylor sat up, then stayed silent until he stood up and walked off the field.

Damon Lux replaced him as a runner, and Rocker struck out Matt Mervis with Clarke throwing out Lux at second.

Jarvis (5-2) struck out nine through seven innings taking the loss.

With two out in the fifth, Ethan Paul singled, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Jarvis. He scored when Clarke poked a single into right field for the only run Rocker needed.

Rocker struck out the side in the fifth, though Ethan Murray reached base on a pitch Clarke couldn't handle.

Vanderbilt added two in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Scott and a squeeze bunt by Julian Infante.
